Dear Family and Friends of the Diocese of Eau Claire,
For several days I have tangled with a nasty cold. Sleep usually is the best cure, but for some reason I couldn’t get any rest last night. In order to get better I have to take a day, stay at home, and focus on my health.
When we are healthy we take our health for granted. This is as it should be. God didn’t create us to focus on sickness or health. The human body is a magnificent instrument intended for purposes beyond itself. It is when we are seriously ill that we realize what a gift good health actually is.
The four Gospels give great emphasis to Jesus’ ability to heal. His miracles range from seeing to hearing to walking, to mental health. Jesus conquers diseases and thwarts death. Why is this so important? It is because God intends for us to move beyond our wellness to care for others and to advance his purposes in the world.
Take care of your body. It is the only one you have. It is God’s gift to you. Do what you can to stay well. Use your good health to care for those who may be ill. In doing so you are making a difference—just as Jesus did. With my love and best wishes, I am,
Your brother in Christ,
Jay
